Region of abdomen and disease.

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barkatuhu, I hope you are well. The topic that I will discuss briefly today is-

Region of abdomen and disease

The abdomen is divided into regions to help pinpoint the location of pain or discomfort and identify potential underlying causes. There are nine regions and four quadrants commonly used in medical practice. Here’s a breakdown:

Nine Abdominal Regions:

The abdomen can be divided into nine regions using two horizontal and two vertical lines.

1. Right Hypochondriac Region

Location: Upper right

Organs: Liver, gallbladder, right kidney

Common Causes of Pain: Gallstones, liver disease

2. Epigastric Region

Location: Upper middle

Organs: Stomach, pancreas, liver, part of the small intestine

Common Causes of Pain: Acid reflux, gastritis, pancreatitis

3. Left Hypochondriac Region

Location: Upper left

Organs: Spleen, part of the stomach, left kidney

Common Causes of Pain: Spleen issues, gastric ulcers

4. Right Lumbar (Flank) Region

Location: Middle right

Organs: Ascending colon, right kidney

Common Causes of Pain: Kidney stones, urinary tract infections

5. Umbilical Region

Location: Center (around the navel)

Organs: Small intestine, part of the stomach, transverse colon

Common Causes of Pain: Early appendicitis, small bowel obstruction

6. Left Lumbar (Flank) Region

Location: Middle left

Organs: Descending colon, left kidney

Common Causes of Pain: Diverticulitis, kidney infection

7. Right Iliac (Inguinal) Region

Location: Lower right

Organs: Appendix, cecum

Common Causes of Pain: Appendicitis, right ovarian cyst

8. Hypogastric (Suprapubic) Region

Location: Lower middle

Organs: Bladder, uterus (in females), part of the small intestine

Common Causes of Pain: Bladder infections, menstrual cramps

9. Left Iliac (Inguinal) Region

Location: Lower left

Organs: Sigmoid colon

Common Causes of Pain: Constipation, diverticulitis

Four Abdominal Quadrants:

Alternatively, the abdomen can be divided into four quadrants using one horizontal and one vertical line intersecting at the navel.

1. Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ)

Organs: Liver, gallbladder, right kidney, part of the pancreas

Common Causes of Pain: Gallstones, liver disease

2. Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ)

Organs: Stomach, spleen, left kidney, part of the pancreas

Common Causes of Pain: Gastric ulcers, spleen issues

3. Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ)

Organs: Appendix, right ovary (in females), part of the small intestine

Common Causes of Pain: Appendicitis, ovarian cysts

4. Left Lower Quadrant (LLQ)

Organs: Sigmoid colon, left ovary (in females), part of the small intestine

Common Causes of Pain: Diverticulitis, ovarian cysts

Identifying the region of pain can provide important clues about the potential cause of abdominal pain and guide further medical investigation
