anthelmintic? Types, drugs & dosages?

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barkatuhu, I hope you are well. The topic that I will discuss briefly today is-

anthelmintic? Types, drugs & dosages?

**Worms** are parasitic organisms that can live in the human body, particularly in the intestines, and absorb nutrients from their host. They can cause various health problems, especially in children and people with weak immune systems, but they can affect anyone. Worm infections are commonly referred to as **helminth infections**, and they often lead to issues with digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall health.

### **Types of Worms**

Worms that affect humans are generally divided into two main categories:

1. **Nematodes (Roundworms)**:

   - **Ascaris lumbricoides** (Roundworm): Commonly infects the intestines and can cause malnutrition and intestinal blockage.

   - **Hookworms**: Attach to the intestinal wall and feed on blood, potentially leading to anemia.

   - **Pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis)**: Commonly affect children, causing itching around the anal area, especially at night.

2. **Platyhelminthes (Flatworms)**:

   - **Tapeworms (Cestodes)**: Long, flat worms that live in the intestines and can grow quite long. They absorb nutrients from digested food.

   - **Flukes (Trematodes)**: These are leaf-shaped worms that can infect the liver, lungs, or blood vessels.

### **Symptoms of Worm Infection**

- Abdominal pain

- Weight loss

- Nausea and vomiting

- Diarrhea

- Fatigue

- Itching around the anus (especially with pinworm)

- Visible worms in stool

### **Worm Medicines and Dosage**

Several types of medications are used to treat worm infections, each targeting specific types of worms. Below are the most common medications:

1. **Albendazole**:

   - **Dosage**: Typically, a single dose of 400 mg for adults and children above 2 years.

   - **Use**: Effective against a variety of worms, including roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms.

2. **Mebendazole**:

   - **Dosage**: A single dose of 100 mg, repeated after 2 weeks if necessary.

   - **Use**: Mainly used for treating roundworm and hookworm infections.

3. **Ivermectin**:

   - **Dosage**: Depends on the weight, typically 150-200 mcg/kg, taken as a single dose.

   - **Use**: Effective for roundworms, particularly strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis.

4. **Pyrantel Pamoate**:

   - **Dosage**: It comes in liquid and tablet forms; dosage is based on body weight (10 mg/kg, up to a maximum of 1 gram).

   - **Use**: Primarily used for pinworms and roundworms.

### **Precautions and Advice**:

- Always follow the prescribed dosage, as underdosing or overdosing can lead to treatment failure or side effects.

- Consult a healthcare professional for the proper diagnosis of the type of worm infection before taking any medication.

- Some medications may need to be repeated after a few weeks to ensure all worms are killed, including their larvae.

### **Prevention**:

- Maintain good hygiene by washing hands regularly.

- Properly clean and cook food.

- Avoid walking barefoot in areas where soil might be contaminated.

- Keep nails trimmed to prevent contamination from dirt.

Worm infections can be easily treated with proper medication, but prevention through good hygiene and clean food practices is key to avoiding reinfection.
